The Volunteers of America (VOA) Staten Island ACT Program service a maximum of 68 mental health consumers. All services are delivered by experienced clinicians and licensed professionals as stipulated in the New York State Office of Mental Health’s guidelines.

We are currently seeking a LMSW or LCSW with at least three years of supervisory experience, a valid driver’s license and experience working in an outpatient mental health setting. A combination of demonstrated skills and accomplishments in the following areas are required:

Well, last Friday, July 22nd the SF professional chapter of Net Impact and the Bay Area chapter of the HUB “kicked” off a very different type of competition to see which one of these social entrepreneur networks does the most good.

It’s the first competition of its sort in which members ‘check-in’ their good deeds online and get awarded points. At the end of a month, the membership with the most collective points will win the cup.

Of course, the competition is more friend than foe. The Net Impact and HUB leadership care less about winning the competition than giving their members (900 vs 550, respectively) an engaging way to get to know each other. Checking in good actions is the grease in the wheel of this online social “action” networking platform, powered by Blitz Bazaar (full disclosure: I am the founder of Blitz Bazaar). The members can mingle online and see all the uplifting things everyone else is doing.

For the first time, Muhammad Yunus, the father of microfinance and critic of for-profit microfinance approaches, weighs in on the Unitus situation.

“The other nonprofit ensnared in controversy is a Seattle-based group called Unitus, which holds a stake in SKS that will be worth millions after the I.P.O. The group’s board shocked the nonprofit community this month by saying that all of the organization’s 40-person staff would be laid off and that Unitus would no longer be involved in microfinance activities.

…“If Unitus is closing down, that shows what is the real result of this I.P.O.,” said Muhammad Yunus, an economics professor who is considered the father of microfinance and has been critical of the SKS stock offering. “You are now encouraging the profit-maximizing part, and the nonprofits are closing down.”
